Philosophy

Surmount exists because dishonest money is a real harm. We argue for a voluntary, Bitcoin-first path so the end of the dollar can be a joyous debt jubilee instead of hyperinflation and bloodshed. That is the company philosophy we will stand behind.

Bitcoin and monetary sovereignty

Bitcoin is a direct challenge to nation-state monetary sovereignty + a voluntary check on central banker overreach.

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, named on Grokipedia Bitcoin and in Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System (Satoshi Nakamoto). A central bank is the institution that issues currency and conducts monetary policy.

First option versus hyperinflation

If we want to avoid the violence and bloodshed typical of hyperinflation, Bitcoin must be the first option.

That is a company claim about how we want the transition to go. Hyperinflation is a collapse of a currency's purchasing power; historical cases are named on that Grokipedia page, not invented here.

Fiat, 1971, and debt jubilee

The dollar as we know it has only been that way since 1971. Fiat systems end as those before them ended. We may now have the technology to learn from history. We want the demise of the dollar to be a joyous debt jubilee, not chaos. Debt jubilees every fifty years should return as a matter of course.

That 1971 sentence is our historical reading of the Nixon shock and the end of dollar convertibility into gold: monetary history on this page, separate from the Leviticus 25 verses printed below. Fiat money is government-issued money not convertible to a commodity. The Bretton Woods system and the gold standard are the monetary order that reading names. The biblical jubilee is Leviticus 25: the fiftieth year of Jubilee, when remission is proclaimed and every man returns to his possession. That law is distinct from the 1971 historical reading. A debt jubilee is the broader name for ancient and later debt cancellation. Quoted scripture on this page is Original Douay-Rheims, not an encyclopedia paraphrase.

Thou shalt number thee also seven weeks of years, that is to say, seven times seven, which together make forty-nine, years:

Thou shalt sanctify the fiftieth year, and shalt proclaim remission to all the inhabitants of thy land: for it is the year of Jubilee. Every man shall return to his possession, & every one shall go back to his old family:

In the year of Jubilee all shall return to their possessions.

Honest weights and measures

Surmount Systems is founded on Christian principles, including honest weights and measures.

The words we print are Leviticus 19:35-36, Deuteronomy 25:13-15, and Proverbs 11:1. There is no dedicated encyclopedia article for that phrase. These are printed framework verses, quoted in full. The one-citation vocabulary warrants are only false testimony, peace-makers, and Cherubins.

Do not any unjust thing in judgment, in rule, in weight, or measure.

Let the balance be just, and the weights equal, the bushel just, and the sextary equal. I the Lord your God, that brought you out of the Land of Ægypt.

Thou shalt not have diverse weights in thy bag, a greater and a less:

neither shall there be in thy house a greater bushel and a less.

Thou shalt have a weight just and true, and thy bushel shall be equal and true: that thou mayest live a long time upon the Land, which our Lord thy God shall give thee.

Adeceitful balance, is abomination before God: and an equal weight is his will.

Natural law

We work toward a hardened, defensible monetary system, built on natural law. On this site science is natural philosophy: look at nature without flinching, and keep claims inside the scientific method. Applied mathematics + cryptography are emergent properties of nature. They are extrajudicial.

Voluntary system

We hold that a voluntary system is the fitting solution. Bitcoin is the natural choice, and it still has flaws. We must make it more secure + more private + more scalable + work for us.

Protection and the OS we aim to build

If our contributors and friends and loved ones are most protected against all conceivable threats to the things they value, we will endure where others fail. That is one of the most important company philosophies. The OS we aim to build is the most absurdly paranoid and hardened OS that is still computationally efficient.

Computer systems design

That OS aim, the cryptographic protocols, and the Bitcoin infrastructure research are computer systems design. The Census wording is planning and designing computer systems that integrate computer hardware, software, and communication technologies.
